Blackburn was hired to teach art at the City College of New York in 1949. In 1970, he became a professor of art at Columbia University and remained there for 20 years. Among the many awards Blackburn received are the Purchase Award of the Library of Congress, a Creative Artists Program Award, and the first Augusta Savage Memorial Award. In 1992, he was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship for lifetime achievement.
